Biological Science Technician

Serves as a GS-05 seasonal Biological Science Technician at Hot Springs National Park. Implements and supervises seasonal projects focused on exotic vegetation monitoring and control, native vegetation restoration, vegetation phenology monitoring, and sensitive vegetation management. Assists with implementation of existing volunteer programs, and coordinates with their supervisor on one or more volunteer projects that relate to exotic plant monitoring and control. Coordinates and assists with other divisions, special events, and cross trainings.
This position will map non-native plant species for baseline data and ongoing evaluation of invasive populations and mitigate damage to natural resources and ecosystem balance by eliminating or reducing plant occurrences to help preserve the integrity of the native plant populations within the park.
The technician will input data into an existing ArcGIS geodatabase, and provide both written and tabular documentation of survey results, methodology, treatment areas, and herbicide use statistics. Identify and treat aggressive non-native plant species in the park to reduce their population and spread. Assists with other resource management projects as needed and will have the opportunity to work with other projects such as thermal water monitoring, wildlife survey, and environmental education.
The incumbent should be comfortable working alone or with a crew under sometimes harsh environmental conditions (extreme heat or cold) and be able to work safely in uneven terrain while carrying heavy field gear.
