Post Doc Research Associate - Coastal Biogeochemistry

Overview

The Coastal Sciences Division, headquartered at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Sequim Marine Research Operations on Washington State's Olympic Peninsula, is the Department of Energy's only marine research laboratory. This unique facility and the capabilities of its researchers deliver science and technology that is critical to the nation's energy, environmental and security future. 

Building upon a history of research related to marine and coastal resources, environmental chemistry, water resources modeling, ecotoxicology and biotechnology—and more recently, national and homeland security—the MSL is emerging as a leader in these three areas: 
  • Enabling sustainable development of ocean energy
  • Understanding and mitigating long-term impacts of human activities, including climate change, on marine resources 
  • Protecting coastal environments from security threats 

Responsibilities

The researcher in this position will:
  • Conduct laboratory sample preparation (e.g. lyophilization, acid digestions, etc.),
  • Operate and maintain field and laboratory equipment, as needed,
  • Interact, communicate, and problem solve with a diverse team of research staff within the MSL coastal biogeochemistry group,
  • Present research at technical conferences and project/program review meetings, and
  • Contribute to and prepare technical reports and scientific publications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Is skilled at working in a chemical laboratory environment with common laboratory equipment and has experience preparing samples for analysis using trace-clean techniques,
  • Is experienced with ICP-MS, ICP-OES, MERX, DMA, or TOC-L instruments,
  • Has participated in proposal writing,
  • Has demonstrated the ability to work well in teams,
  • Is a self-starter able to work independently to accomplish tasks in both the PNNL laboratory and offsite environments,
  • Has the capability to learn, implement, and compliantly execute the broad range of systems (safety, quality, procurement, etc.) necessary to complete project tasks,
  • Experience with Washington State Dept. of Ecology’s Environmental Monitoring Data system,
  • Must be able to accommodate a dynamic and potentially varying work schedule, depending on project needs, and
  • Must be able to work in cold weather environments and lift up to 50lbs
 
Degree in chemistry, earth sciences, or related field. 3.5 GPA or higher is preferred.
