Natural Resource Intern - Wild & Scenic River Educator

These River Checker/Educator positions require living at remote (and beautiful!) guard stations within the Salmon-Challis National Forest such as Boundary Creek, Indian Creek, or Corn Creek. The locations are along designated Wild & Scenic River systems and major portals to access the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness.
 
A work schedule is typically 8 days on and 6 days off. Positions may require working weekends and holidays. Employee housing is available.
 
River Checker (Natural Resource Intern) – GS-05
  • Educate Wild & Scenic River users on Leave-No-Trace practices, wilderness ethics, chinook mitigation efforts, fire updates, river hazards, answer questions.
  • Responsible for giving wilderness and river interpretive talks several times each day, inspect boats for aquatic invasive species, check required equipment, assign river camps, and issue float permits to groups.
  • Maintain facilities and campgrounds such as buildings, picnic tables, restrooms, fire rings, boat ramps, airstrips, Heli-spots, etc. This includes painting, staining, using hand tools, and cleaning supplies.
  • Individuals will also interact with fisherman, stock users, aviators, and backpackers answering wilderness and river questions and explain area rules and regulations and may be a Forest Protection Officer.
  • The individual works independently or on a small crew requiring initiative, an excellent work ethic and the ability to greet forest visitor in a friendly and professional manner.
  • The selected individuals may serve as Collection Officers for campgrounds.
